A $50,000 gift from Gerry McGough of Jonesboro has endowed a new scholarship at Williams Baptist College. McGough recently presented the gift to the four-year, liberal arts college at Walnut Ridge.
McGough taught art and education at Williams for 15 years in the 1970s and '80s, and she said her experience with the college led her to establish the scholarship.
"Having taught there for so many years, I know the kind of values the school holds and stands by, and I think a young person will do well in that kind of atmosphere. Also, my children went there, so I definitely have a soft spot for Williams," she said.
The Gerry McGough Scholarship is aimed primarily toward WBC students from Walnut Street Baptist Church in Jonesboro, where McGough has been a member for over 40 years. "I'm hoping someone who could not go to college otherwise can afford a college education in a Christian atmosphere," McGough said.
"Mrs. McGough has a wonderful history with Williams Baptist College, and by endowing this scholarship she is enabling countless future students to benefit from a Williams education," said Dr. Tom Jones, WBC's president. "We sincerely appreciate this generous gift."
