Despite Hot Start, Lady Eagles Fall to HLG
The Williams Baptist College volleyball squad played back-to-back five set thrillers against the Trojans from Hannibal-LaGrange University on Saturday at Walnut Ridge. Unfortunately, HLG came away with the "W" in both contests.
"The girls fought hard against a good team on our home floor. HLG deserves a lot of credit for their effort and play in the matches," said Head Coach Eric Newell.
The Lady Eagles started the first contest well by winning the first two sets 25-19 and 25-22. However, HLG bounced back to take the final three sets: 25-18, 25-21, and 21-19. The fifth set was back and forth the whole way through, with HLG scoring the last two points to earn the victory.
Harley Strayhorn paced the Eagles attack with a team high 16 kills, while Courtney Melvin led the team with 28 digs on defense.
The second match was just as thrilling as the first one, but finished with the Trojans winning 28-26, 22-25, 18-25, 25-22, 17-15.
The Eagles had three ladies record double figure kills: Kaillie Ralston with 14, Katie Thomas with 14 and Strayhorn with 13. Once again, Melvin led the team defensively with 23 digs. Makenna Wiedower collected 28 assists, followed by Codie Lancaster with 18.
"We are obviously disappointed but we can't hold onto it very long because Park is coming to town," said Newell.
Williams record now stands at 11-6 overall and 3-6 in the American Midwest Conference. They will play Park University in a single match on Monday, September 24 in Walnut Ridge. Park is receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25 poll. The match begins at 6 p.m.
