Eagles Set to Open Conference Play


Williams Baptist College will hit the hardwood this weekend with back to back double headers on Friday and Saturday against Park University.  The Lady Eagles will tip off the weekend at 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening, followed by the Eagles game.  On Saturday, the ladies game will start at 2 p.m. followed by the men’s.  The games will the first American Midwest Conference contests of the season for both squads.

The Lady Eagles enter conference play with a record of six wins and four losses.  Coach Carol Halford's team ranks second in the nation in defensive rebounds per contest, sixth in free throw percentage, and eighth in 3-point field goal percentage.  

Individually, Jessica Shepard leads the nation in 3-pt field goal percentage.  She is hitting 53 percent of her shots from behind the arc.  Olivia Morris is ranked 13th in defensive rebounds per game with 6.9.

Kala Tyus leads the Lady Eagles in scoring with 12.90 a game while shooting 52 percent from the field.

The Lady Eagles will face a stern test with Park’s harassing defense.  The Lady Pirates defense ranks first in the NAIA only giving up 46.55 points per game.  Their defense is holding opponents to a mere 19 percent from beyond the arc (ranks first) and 32 percent from the field (ranks fourth).  

Sophomore guard Vivian Holcomb leads the Lady Pirates with a scoring average of 12.60 per contest.  

The Williams Eagles reach conference competition with a record of four wins and seven losses.  Coach Josh Austin’s Eagles have played a scrappy defense which has forced 9.82 steals per game which ranks 22nd in the NAIA.  

WBC is led by junior Kyle Harvey with his average of 20.82 points per game and 55 percent field goal percentage.  Harvey ranks first in the American Midwest Conference and 16th nationally in points per game and second in the AMC and 33rd nationally in field goal percentage.  

Through their first fourteen contests the Pirates have managed six wins while losing eight.  The Pirates have four players averaging double figures.  Reco Anderson 14.63, Melvin Gatson 11.86, Stedmon Lemon 11.85, and Wardell Satterwhite are all scoring above ten.  

The Pirates are holding opponents to 29 percent shooting behind the arc, which ranks 20th in the NAIA.  Also, they are ranked 46th in total 3-point field goals made with 84.
