Halford Wins Her 400th

2/12/2010

Williams Baptist College women’s basketball coach Carol Halford reached a milestone Thursday night, earning her 400th career victory. Halford coached her Lady Eagles to an 89-81 overtime win over Stephens College at Columbia, Mo.

“This is not just a big moment for Carol, but for her team and WBC as a whole. The whole college has been cheering for her as we saw this milestone drawing closer, and now we are delighted that she has gotten that 400th win,” said WBC President Dr. Jerol Swaim.

The Lady Eagles pulled off Thursday’s win behind Courtney Sublett, who led WBC with 29 points. Jessica Shepard followed with 20, and Olivia Morris had 17. Williams trailed at the half, 35-25, but by the end of regulation the score was knotted at 71 apiece. WBC is 13-11 overall this season and 6-5 in the American Midwest Conference.

Halford is in her 26th year at the helm of the Lady Eagles and has spent her entire coaching career at Williams. Her career record is now 400-331.

“This is truly a monumental achievement,” said Jeff Rider, WBC’s director of athletics. “Coach Halford had long since established her place in the history of Williams athletics, and now she has added another great accomplishment.”

Among Halford’s other achievements was winning a national championship, the National Christian College Athletic Association title, in 1993. She is also chair of WBC’s physical education department, and she served as the college’s director of athletics from 1989 to 2006.

She will be recognized for her 400th win at the start of Saturday’s home game against William Woods University. That contest begins at 2:00 p.m. in WBC’s Southerland-Mabee Center.
