Lady Eagles Continue Hot Streak, Sweep Stars
The Williams Baptist College volleyball squad swept a doubleheader from the Stars of Stephens College at Walnut Ridge Saturday. The sweep improved WBC's record to 18-10 overall and 7-9 in the American Midwest Conference.
The Lady Eagles have won four AMC matches in a row and six of their last eight contests overall.
"I am very happy with the effort in the performance of the girls over the past weeks," said Head Coach Eric Newell.
Despite missing three players due to injuries over the weekend, the Lady Eagles won both matches in straight sets. Match one was won 25-18, 25-21, and 25-17, they followed that up with a 25-20, 25-9, 25-14 win.
A couple of seniors stepped up and provided leadership for the team. Mountain Home, Ark., native Katie Thomas collected 17 kills in the two contests to give her 126 on the season. Courtney Melvin amassed 34 digs in the two matches. She is from Benton, Ill.
"Their effort was great and we were able to win convincingly," said Newell.
Williams is now in sixth place in the AMC standings, which would qualify them for the playoffs. The team will travel to Kansas City, Mo., for a contest against 25th ranked Park University on Monday, Oct. 22.
The Lady Eagles will play at home on Saturday, Oct. 27, hosting a tri-match with Hendrix College and Crowley's Ridge College. Williams is scheduled to play Hendrix at 12 p.m. and Crowley's Ridge at 4 p.m. in the Southerland-Mabee Center.
