Lady Eagles Volleyball Aims to Continue Success

8/10/2012

Walnut Ridge, Ark. - The Williams Baptist College volleyball squad has won 71 games in the last three seasons, including the best record (27-9) in school history in 2011.  The team started season preparations on Monday, August 6, upon the arrival of 17 student-athletes.  The players will go through three weeks of preseason practices and meetings.

Williams has won at least 20 games in five of the last six seasons. Head Coach Eric Newell said the keys to continued success are “hard work, proper mind set (team first attitude), and staying healthy.”

Newell has replaced three seniors and some other departures from last year with eight incoming freshmen and a transfer.

“Caitlin Wakefield, Kelsey Davault and Haley Motley were all great players and they will be missed in different ways, but we are excited about this recruiting class and look forward to see how they progress,” said Newell

Despite the big freshmen class, the Lady Eagles possess a plethora of experience with eight returners, all of whom played a significant part in last year’s historic season.

The returners consist of three sophomores, two juniors, and three seniors.

Katie Thomas, Courtney Melvin, and Codie Lancaster will wear the Eagle uniform for one last season.  “I am very confident in their game experience and decision making.  They are seasoned veterans,” said Newell.

“This year’s team consists of a group of very special young ladies who are taking on an enormous challenge of following the most successful team in WBC volleyball history.  With that said, these girls are coming in with the mindset that they can achieve even more,” said Newell.

The Eagles will jump on the court with the WBC Tournament on August 24 and 25 in the college’s Southerland-Mabee Center.   The first contest will be against Central Baptist College at 2 p.m. on the 24th followed by Lyon College at 8 p.m.
