S. Portico Bowman Art Show at Williams

10/29/2013

Williams Baptist College is hosting a public art show from now until November 26 as part of the college’s ongoing Lecture/Concert series.  S. Portico Bowman, an art professor at Pittsburgh State University in Pittsburgh, Kan., has installed her “Creature Comforts” displays in the gallery of the Maddox Center, on the WBC campus.

A native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, Bowman has taught at Pittsburgh State University for twelve years.  She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan and her Master’s of Fine Arts from the University of Tennessee.

“Creature Comforts” is an art exhibition that combines various mediums to tell a story, primarily through clouds.  Animal ceramics and house-like structures also help to carry out the vision Bowman had a year-and-a-half ago.

“I was quietly sitting in my house one evening, I think it was a Sunday, and the image of clouds just came to me,” said Bowman.  “From there, I pursued various elements and now it is quite satisfying to see the completed works.”

“If there is one thing I wish people walk away with after viewing this collection of art pieces,” added Bowman, “it would be that they go, sit outside, and look at the clouds.  Push away the chaos of life, and just be ok with being silent and spending time in meditation with God.”

Bowman’s work can be viewed Mondays-Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Maddox Center gallery.  The exhibit will also be open Saturday, November 2, for WBC’s Homecoming/Parents’ Day, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  The public is invited and there is no entry fee.
