Shane Smith Making Strides in Recovery
Less than two weeks after being critically injured in an accidental shooting, Shane Smith is making substantial progress. The Williams sophomore, who plays for the Eagles basketball team, has recuperated to the point he can now receive intensive physical therapy as he continues his recovery.
Smith has been moved from his former hospital room to the rehabilitation wing of Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home. Family members report that while Shane continues to deal with some infection and other lingering effects of the shooting, they are extremely pleased with his recovery to this point.
"It’s a miracle he is still here and that he is doing this well. God’s hand is the only possible explanation for this," noted Smith’s sister Ashley Bateman, who is a WBC graduate. "We are so thankful to all the people who have been praying for Shane."
The accidental shooting happened on January 30 in Smith’s hometown of Salem. He was hit in the lower abdomen by a shotgun blast at close range. He was airlifted to Baxter Regional, where he underwent two lengthy surgeries and remained in intensive care for several days.
Smith is the son of Wendall and Tena Smith of Salem.
