Softball Eagles Advance to Championship Series
Hallie Horton swings as fans watch from tailgates in left field.
The tailgaters got another treat Tuesday at the WBC Softball Field, as Williams Baptist College swept Park University in the American Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals. The Lady Eagles, as top seed in the tournament, will now host the championship series on Friday.
A three-run sixth inning propelled Williams to a 6-5 win in the first game, and the Lady Eagles notched a 4-1 win in the second contest, clinching the best-of-three series.
In the first game, the Lady Eagles were trailing, 5-3, with two outs in the sixth inning when Teighlor Melton belted an RBI double to left. Hallie Horton followed with a single to shallow right center that drove in two more runs, giving WBC what proved to be its winning margin.
Karisa Hendrix went the distance for Williams in the pitcher’s circle, allowing five runs on six hits over the seven innings. She fanned five and walked one.
Felicia Woodard led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Horton was 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Melton was 1-for-3 with and RBI. Mallarie Lee was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
In the nightcap, Williams plated two runs in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and then scored an insurance run in the seventh and final inning. Ashley Boyles went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Melton was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Woodard was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Lee added another two runs.
Hendrix scattered six hits and allowed only one run in pitching another complete game. She struck out two and walked one.
As they did on Friday, when WBC swept Harris-Stowe in the tournament’s first round, Williams students and other Lady Eagles fans lined the outfield fence to watch from truck tailgates. Others watched the game in more conventional fashion, in bleachers and lawn chairs behind home plate.
The Lady Eagles will play William Woods in the championship round. That series will begin Friday at 2:00 p.m. at WBC. A third game, if necessary, would be played on Saturday.
