Volleyball Eagles Open Conference Play with Victory
The Lady Eagles volleyball squad from Williams Baptist College has opened its season with nine straight wins, after sweeping a tri-match on Saturday. The tri-match was played in Batesville, Ark., and included an American Midwest Conference clash with Lyon College. The other victory was against Philander Smith College.
The Lyon match was the first AMC contest of the season for the Eagles, and it would go down to the wire. WBC won in five hard fought sets: 16-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17, and 15-11.
Jameea Ward led the Eagles with 13 kills from the front. Following her was a pair of freshmen. Harley Strayhorn scored 10 kills followed by Kaillie Ralston with 9.
Ralston added 13 digs on the defensive end, which was second on the team to Courtney Melvin. Melvin recorded 22 digs.
In the second contest of the tri-match, Williams handled PSC comfortably with a straight set victory: 25-5, 25-18, and 25-22.
WBC's record is 9-0 overall and 1-0 in the AMC. The Lady Eagles will jump back on the court when they travel to Missouri Baptist University on Monday, September 10. The doubleheader will begin at 4 p.m. MBU is ranked 14th nationally in the latest NAIA poll.
The next home match will be a doubleheader on September 22, against Hannibal-LaGrange University.
