WBC Volleyball Season Ends With 23 Wins
The Williams Baptist College volleyball season came to a halt in the quarterfinals of the American Midwest Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening at Parkville, Mo. Park University beat the Lady Eagles in three sets: 25-23, 25-17 and 25-18.
The loss ends a season in which a young Eagles squad won 23 contests, while losing only 12. It is the sixth time in seven seasons the team has reached the 20 win mark.
The team won nine of its final 11 matches, and also opened the season with nine straight victories. Williams finished 8-10 in conference play.
There are three Lady Eagles who eclipsed 200 kills for the season. Freshmen Harley Strayhorn (208) from Marion, Ark., and Kaillie Ralston (231) from Denton, Tex., joined sophomore Jameea Ward (253) from Missouri City, Tex. Senior Katie Thomas from Mountain Home, Ark., also added 180 kills to the WBC attack.
Ward and Strayhorn led the team in blocks as well. Ward ended the season with 29, and Strayhorn contributed 18.
Junior Makenna Wiedower from Denton, Texas led the team in assists on the season with 558. She was followed by senior Codie Lancaster of Bell City, Mo., who collected 461.
The defense was led by senior Courtney Melvin of Benton, Ill., who compiled 430 digs on the season. She was followed by sophomore Shelby Upshaw of Mountain Home with 205 and Ralston with 196.
Williams will lose three seniors, Katie Thomas, Courtney Melvin, and Codie Lancaster. The team finished in sixth place in the AMC. The 23 wins were four short of the WBC record of 27.
